Dental Hygiene and Preventive Care
Dr. Baldwin Marchack and Dr. Christopher Marchack provide personalized preventive care to help protect the health, comfort, and appearance of your smile.
Professional hygiene visits are an important part of maintaining oral health, but the habits you practice throughout the year matter too. The dental hygiene team at Pasadena Prosthodontics is here to help you care for your smile both in our office and at home.
Professional Preventive Care
What Happens During a Regular Checkup?
A hygiene visit begins with a professional cleaning, also called dental prophylaxis or a “prophy.” Our experienced hygienists use specialized instruments to gently remove calculus—the hardened plaque commonly known as tartar—from above and below the gumline.
They also remove the bacterial plaque that coats the teeth and produces toxins that can irritate gum tissue and contribute to periodontal disease. Remaining plaque and surface stains are then addressed with a final polish.
Your Comprehensive Examination
During your visit, the dentist may perform a comprehensive examination that includes:
- Evaluating the health of your gums and the bone surrounding your teeth.
- Checking each tooth for decay, fractures, chips, and wear.
- Inspecting fillings, crowns, bridges, and other dental restorations.
- Evaluating the fit and condition of dentures and other dental appliances.
- Screening the mouth, throat, lips, neck, and face for signs of oral cancer.
- Taking digital X-rays when appropriate based on your age, oral health, history, and risk factors.
Modern Diagnostic Technology
The Importance of Digital X-Rays
Our practice uses digital radiography to produce high-resolution diagnostic images with minimal radiation exposure. These images allow the dentist to examine areas that cannot be seen during a visual examination.
Digital X-rays can reveal concerns involving oral development, hidden decay, bone loss, cysts, and other changes below the surface. Early detection may allow for more efficient, conservative, and comfortable treatment. These images are also an important part of accurate treatment planning.

Caring for Your Smile Between Visits
Personalized Help With Home Care
Our hygiene team provides personalized instruction and hands-on demonstrations to help you care for your teeth and gums between professional visits. We can help you improve brushing and flossing techniques and identify areas that may require additional attention.
The dentist may also discuss nutrition and lifestyle habits that affect oral health. Consistent home care is especially important following prosthodontic treatment because it supports comfortable healing and helps preserve your results.
